November 9 – 12
Eleni arranged an awesome homestay with a local from Puerto Jimenez: Elias. Elias is a farmer and a tour guide.
The first day we arrived, he taught us how to make chocolate from scratch! Picking the fruit, drying the seeds, roast, peel, grind, heat with sugar, cool.
We went to beautiful beaches and local bars with absolutely no tourists. We foraged for our food in the wild and made amazing homemade meals every day. Just some incredients that we collected were coconuts, clams, fruit (that I don’t know the name of in English… “Zapote”), sugarcane, oranges, etc.
It was really fun to live like a local and not surrounded by WiFi and tourists… Chickens walking into the house, showering outside, using a toilet outside, and getting dirty every day.
“Zapote” is in the plum family indigenous to Central America. In English we call it sapodilla but it is relatively unknown in the US.
