It was New Year’s Eve and we were in Pattaya, Thailand. We flagged down a guy on a motorcycle to drive us to town for US$2. As we were approaching the busy scene, I noticed there were a ton of stars out that night… stars that were really bright… and close… and moving… ??
Well, they weren’t stars… and at that point I still was unsure of what they were, but there were a million of them in the sky… and I although the motorcycle I was on was loud and fast, and cars and mopeds sped by honking, I couldn’t believe how peaceful these things were in the sky. I felt like I was in a trance staring at them – so calm, so serene…

Once in town, I quickly learned that they were merely paper lanterns that the locals [and tourists] release into the sky on New Year’s Eve around midnight. I loved this! They were like mellow, beautiful, extremely slow, quiet, magical fireworks… a New Year’s Eve I will never forget!
