Punakaiki is the proper name but people refer to this amazing place, simply, as “Pancake Rocks” because the natural rock formations look like stacks of pancakes!
The crashing waves look terrifying below and the enormous waves push themselves through holes in the rocks which cause the water to spray upward like a geyser!
Where
Pancake Rocks is located in Paparoa National Park. Luckily for you this national park is completely free! Parking and the path entrance is directly on the side of the road. Just park, walk a few meters, and enjoy the show!
When To Go
Although the water pushing itself through the holes in the rocks happens with any big wave, I would recommend getting there around high tide because it happens more regularly and it truly one of the best sights to see in New Zealand!
